Michael Schenker was just 15 years old when he recorded ‘Lonesome Crow’. Remarkably, Michael wrote 90% of the music for this album, yet the songs were credited to all the Scorpions band members—who were all around 22 years old at the time—for reasons unknown. Among these tracks, ‘In Search of Peace of Mind’ stands out as the very first song Michael ever wrote. Despite this, it too was credited to the entire band. The solo in this song remains one of Michael’s favorite lead breaks from all his work, showcasing his early mastery of the guitar.
‘Lonesome Crow’ holds a special place in history as the first album recorded by the Scorpions and marked Michael Schenker’s debut in the recording studio. He was 17 when the album was finally released, setting the stage for a legendary career.
Michael and Klaus Meine formed the powerhouse team that enabled the Scorpions to record their first album. It was Michael’s older brother, Rudolf, who invited them to join the band. Before this, Michael and Klaus had been playing together in a band called ‘Copernicus’, performing covers of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Rory Gallagher songs—impressive for a 14-year-old Michael.
The early years of the Scorpions saw them playing mostly dance music starting in 1964, when Michael was only 9 and Rudolf 16. Both brothers began playing guitar at the same time, with Michael quickly developing his skills on lead and rhythm guitar, eventually teaching Rudolf the new songs for their upcoming gigs.
‘Lonesome Crow’ marked the beginning of the Scorpions’ professional journey. Klaus Meine’s distinctive voice combined with Michael’s extraordinary guitar talent—showcased at just 15 years old—earned them immediate international attention. The album was later re-released with a sticker highlighting ‘Featuring: Michael Schenker of UFO’, a nod to Michael’s rising fame with UFO that brought significant recognition back to the Scorpions.
As Michael’s success with UFO grew, so did the Scorpions’ reach. His involvement with the band continued through albums like ‘Lovedrive’, which ultimately opened doors to the American music scene, propelling the Scorpions to new heights.
